Description
The City of Lavonia is soliciting proposals for a City Solicitor to perform advanced professional legal work. This role involves the prosecution of misdemeanor criminal cases and civil cases arising from violations of the City's Unified Development Code and other Code of Ordinance provisions. The Solicitor will also participate in administrative and research functions in civil areas as directed, and will prosecute cases within the jurisdiction of the City Charter, ordinances, and Georgia State Statutes that fall under the original jurisdiction of the Lavonia Municipal Court. Qualifications for this position include being a resident of Georgia, being an Attorney-At-Law admitted to practice in Georgia and in good standing with the State Bar, having at least five years of experience as a practicing attorney in Georgia, and being bondable. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of proper courtroom procedure, rules of evidence, criminal law, and local ordinances, laws, and procedures. Strong skills in basic supervisory principles and practices, the ability to grasp complex factual data, draw appropriate conclusions, and communicate complex legal ideas clearly are essential. The City requires the selected solicitor to have appropriate professional liability coverage and to indemnify the City against claims arising from their performance. Proposals must include a resume, cover letter and statement of qualifications, the required monthly flat fee, a fee schedule for any additional time required beyond the typical court day, Georgia Bar License Number, and professional references. The term of the contract will be three one-year terms that automatically renew unless either party provides 90 days' notice. Proposals must be submitted in person or via certified mail to the City Clerk's Office by 2:00 PM on July 31, 2026.
