Description
The U.S. Navy is seeking innovative powder synthesis and consolidation approaches for composite ceramic components used in infrared aperture applications. Proposed materials must achieve sub-100 nm microstructural features in all phases, porosity below 0.1%, and at least 80% short-wave to mid-wave infrared (SWIR/MWIR) transparency at component sizes exceeding 2 x 4 x 0.5 inches, with a path toward industrial-scale production of components approximately 3 x 9 inches or larger. The composite ceramic must retain its microstructure and infrared transparency after exposure to temperatures up to 1,200 degrees C for 10 minutes, avoid phase transformation or grain growth, and achieve an alpha-to-thermal-conductivity ratio of no more than 1.0 micrometers/W, with a target of 0.5 micrometers/W at 1,000 degrees C. Characterization includes X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis.
