The Art Study Opportunity for Youth grant program provides grants of up to $500 for students in grades 5–12 to receive focused training in any art discipline through study with a practicing professional artist, an arts workshop, a series of classes, or another special training opportunity. Standard weekly lessons are eligible only for students who qualify for the federal free or reduced-price lunch program. Arts supplies are eligible only for students attending a Minnesota public arts high school. Projects must begin no earlier than the applicable earliest project start date and must conclude by June 30, 2028. Applicants must be permanent residents of the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council service region and must have lived there for at least six months before applying. Applications are evaluated on the student's art experience and the project's contribution to the student's artistic growth. Required materials include an application, work samples, a project budget, and, for mentor-based study, the mentor artist's work samples and letter of commitment. Applications may be submitted through the online grant system, by email with attachments, or on paper by mail or arranged drop-off.
