DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office is planning the Laguna program to develop and demonstrate integrated manufacturing approaches that convert U.S.-produced feedstocks into application-ready specialty chemical products, while reducing intermediate separations, processing steps, and reformulation. Target products include protective and functional coatings; composite resins and adhesives; high-performance polymers and molded structural components; and non-fluorinated alternatives to fluorinated polymers. Products are intended to meet or exceed incumbent military-material performance requirements and provide economically viable domestic alternatives to import-dependent supply chains. The anticipated 36-month program has two technical areas: TA1 will develop and demonstrate formulated defense-relevant products, supported by technoeconomic analysis, life-cycle assessment, and commercialization plans; TA2 will develop models to predict and optimize the relationships among feedstocks, synthesis, formulation, processing, cost, and product performance. This is a future-program special notice, not a solicitation or RFI, and DARPA will not accept submissions in response.
