The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Strategic Technologies Office (STO) is conducting an immediate search for innovative, post-competitive, awardable solutions for moderate power (100W-20kW) high energy lasers (HEL) capable of operating at a high duty cycle within Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP)-constrained systems, such as armored personnel carriers and unmanned aerial vehicles (e.g., Collaborative Combat Aircraft). The primary challenge addressed is the heat generated by current HEL systems, which requires rapid exhaustion to maintain high duty cycles for extended durations. DARPA is interested in new approaches to generating and amplifying HELs in the 100W-20kW range, focusing on innovations in heat exhaust and transport while maintaining beam coherence and other laser quality metrics. Solutions should also allow for phase control for beam tuning within a larger system and demonstrate scalability. DARPA is seeking teams with a deep understanding of the problem space, significant expertise in laser technology, and a clear vision for advancing the state-of-the-art for both defense and commercial applications. Submissions should articulate how their proposed innovation overcomes the limitations of existing solutions and demonstrates a clear potential to impact SWaP-limited tactical HEL systems.
