Description
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), part of the Department of Health and Human Services, is offering a cooperative agreement program to fund research aimed at enhancing the occupational safety of commercial fishing industry workers. This initiative supports projects that focus on improving vessel and deck equipment design, developing and enhancing emergency and protective equipment, refining vessel and fishing processes to mitigate safety risks, improving vessel monitoring systems, and advancing communication devices, de-icing technology, and severe weather detection. The program, established by the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2010, seeks to address the high rates of injury and fatality in the commercial fishing industry. Research objectives include identifying hazardous working conditions, developing better hazard evaluation methods, creating new protective equipment and engineering controls, and improving work practices. Applicants are encouraged to propose innovative approaches and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their research. A 25% non-Federal cost match is required for all awards. The estimated total funding for this program is $975,000, with an anticipated 20 awards. The period of performance is 3 years.
