The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is soliciting proposals for research in plasma physics through its Division of Physics. This opportunity supports investigator-initiated research projects that explore the fundamental principles governing the physical behavior of plasmas, which constitute 99.9% of the visible universe. Research areas include magnetized plasmas, high energy density plasmas, low temperature plasmas, dusty and strongly coupled plasmas, non-neutral plasmas, and intense field-matter interactions. Plasma physics research has broad applications in space physics, astrophysics, materials science, applied mathematics, fusion science, accelerator science, and various engineering disciplines. The program encourages proposals that aim to increase diversity within the plasma physics community and broaden participation of under-represented groups in STEM. Proposals for developing or enhancing plasma physics curricula are also encouraged. While the standard duration for projects is three years, PIs may consult with the Program Director to discuss the possibility of 4- or 5-year durations for projects requiring more time. Proposals should be submitted to the Division-wide solicitation: Division of Physics: Investigator-Initiated Research Projects. The Plasma Physics program also participates in several NSF meta-programs, including ECLIPSE, WoU-MMA, and CDS&E, and may consider proposals in response to relevant Dear Colleague Letters. Collaboration opportunities exist with other funding agencies through existing MOUs.
