This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) from the Department of Health and Human Services aims to support innovative mechanistic research focused on advancing precision probiotic interventions. The goal is to characterize person-specific factors influencing probiotic responses, identify subgroups of individuals who respond to probiotics, and ultimately enhance probiotic clinical outcomes. The NOFO seeks to fund studies that assess how unique patterns of host biology, such as native microbiome, immune system, gender, diet, age, genetic background, lifestyle, and health history, correlate with probiotic usage and can predict improved probiotic responsiveness. Applications should propose rigorously designed mechanistic studies utilizing relevant animal models or human subjects. Projects should demonstrate preliminary data identifying potential host biological patterns correlated with probiotic usage, requiring further mechanistic studies to confirm causality or predictability.
