The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is offering Centers of Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) awards to enhance the research capabilities of Minority-serving institutions (MSIs). These awards aim to foster the development of new knowledge, increase faculty research productivity, and expand the participation of students historically underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Successful proposals will demonstrate a clear vision for integrating STEM research and education, align with the NSF's Division of Equity for Excellence in STEM (EES) mission, and promote diversity in the STEM workforce. Centers are expected to utilize evidence-based strategies for recruitment, retention, and mentorship of underrepresented groups, and to achieve national research competitiveness and secure sustained funding from various sources. Both Phase I and Phase II CREST Center awards provide multi-year support for institutions with a strong research base. Phase I awards offer five years of funding for research on a specific NSF-supported topic. Institutions invited to submit a Phase II proposal may either continue research in the same disciplinary area or propose a new area. CREST Partnership Supplements are also available to current CREST Center awardees to strengthen partnerships with other research centers, private sector laboratories, K-12 schools, and informal science entities. Eligibility is restricted to MSIs offering graduate degrees in NSF STEM areas with at least 50% minority student enrollment, or institutions primarily serving students with disabilities that meet the 50% enrollment criterion. Principal Investigators must hold a full-time faculty appointment at the submitting institution. Funding for partnering institutions should be requested via subawards.
