This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) aims to support the pre-clinical and early-stage clinical (Phase I) development of novel small-molecule and biologic drug candidates designed to prevent Alzheimer's disease (AD), slow its progression, or treat its cognitive and behavioral symptoms. Funding will cover activities such as medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics (PK), Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion, Toxicology (ADMET), efficacy studies in animal models, development of biomarkers for target engagement, formulation development, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) chemical synthesis, Investigational New Drug (IND) enabling studies, and initial Phase I clinical testing. Research focused on basic mechanisms of disease, risk/diagnostic/prognostic/predictive/prevention biomarkers, devices, non-pharmacological interventions, repurposed drugs, combination therapies, discovery activities like high-throughput screening, and stand-alone clinical trials are not responsive to this NOFO. Eligible applicants include various institutions such as Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs), eligible agencies of the Federal Government, faith-based or community-based organizations, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized), private institutions of higher education, U.S. Territory or Possession, and non-profits. Foreign organizations are not eligible to apply, but foreign components of U.S. organizations are. This opportunity is categorized as discretionary funding under cooperative agreement, with a focus on health research, and an award ceiling of $1,500,000.
