The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) is soliciting proposals for the Brain Repair of Any Injured Neural Structure (BRAINS) Exploratory Topic program. This initiative aims to develop technologies for regrowing region-specific brain tissue in situ to restore function lost due to various forms of damage or disease, excluding the neocortex and spinal cord. ARPA-H anticipates multiple Other Transaction awards. The program is divided into two technical areas: TA1 focuses on generating precursor tissue for any brain region other than the neocortex, and TA2 focuses on surgical engraftment of precursor tissue into adult brains in preclinical models. Both phases are expected to last 18 months, with a downselect after the first 9 months. Key milestones include characterizing natural tissue, generating precursor cell types, elaborating tissue generation methods, and demonstrating surgical engraftment with survival and vascularization. Proposals are accepted in two intake groups, with solution summaries due July 9th, 2026, and full proposals due August 6th, 2026, for the first group. The second intake group has solution summaries due January 7th, 2027, and full proposals due February 6th, 2027. All submissions must be made through the ARPA-H Solution Submission Portal.
