This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) supports students pursuing dual-doctoral degrees (e.g., MD/PhD, DO/PhD) at institutions lacking NIH-funded institutional predoctoral dual-degree training programs. The fellowship aims to enhance the integrated research and clinical training of promising predoctoral students who aspire to careers as physician-scientists. Applicants must propose a dissertation research project and an integrated research and clinical training plan in health-related scientific fields aligned with the missions of participating NIH Institutes and Centers. The fellowship experience is designed to significantly improve the individual's potential to become a productive, independent physician-scientist. This NOFO is specifically for candidates whose proposed research does not involve leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary clinical trial, though it does permit research experience within a clinical trial led by a sponsor or co-sponsor. Eligible applicants include other agencies of the Federal Government and private institutions of higher education. Foreign organizations are not eligible to apply, but foreign components of U.S. organizations are permitted.
