This Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) aims to support small-scale research grants at institutions that do not receive substantial NIH funding. The program emphasizes providing undergraduate students with biomedical research experiences and enhancing the research environment at applicant institutions. Eligible institutions must award baccalaureate science degrees and have received no more than $6 million annually in NIH support over the last seven fiscal years. The funding opportunity supports investigator-initiated, minimal risk clinical trials that align with the mission of participating NIH institutes. Minimal risk clinical trials are defined as those not requiring FDA oversight, not intending to formally establish efficacy, and posing low risk of harm. Eligible applicants include public and private institutions of higher education, specifically Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs), Hispanic-serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs). Non-U.S. entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible. Foreign components are permitted.
