Description
The Air Force Research Laboratory is soliciting white papers for research, development, integration, test, and evaluation of technologies to enable ultra-broadband communications in the terahertz band, specifically radio frequencies above 100 GHz. The goal is to design, develop, and demonstrate an ultra-broadband radio that dynamically adjusts carrier frequency, output power, and data rate within the 100 to 300 GHz range. The proposed system should include state-of-the-art modem design, support spreading bandwidth up to 10 GHz, and have a data rate of 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps, adapting to atmospheric conditions, link requirements, and interference. The system should also accurately form and shape terahertz beams to control the signal's presence in time and space while meeting communications requirements. The key performance parameters include a transmission range of 200 m (threshold) to 2000 m (objective) at ground level, a data rate of 1 Mbps (threshold) to 1 Gbps (objective), an instantaneous RF bandwidth of 5 GHz (threshold) to 10 GHz (objective), a beamwidth of 5 degrees (threshold) to 3 degrees (objective), and pointing accuracy of 10 percent (threshold) to 5 percent (objective). The Air Force encourages teaming between performers from multiple technical disciplines and collaboration with AFRL/RI researchers for system tests and demonstrations at AFRL research sites.
