The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is soliciting proposals for its Mid-scale Research Infrastructure Program (RI-1). This program aims to fund experimental research capabilities in the mid-scale range, bridging the gap between the Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) program and Major Multi-user Facilities projects. The program supports either design activities or the implementation of unique and compelling research infrastructure, which can include equipment, instrumentation, cyberinfrastructure, large-scale datasets, and necessary personnel. Projects funded under Mid-scale RI-1 must demonstrate strong scientific merit, address identified needs of the research community or national needs, and foster a diverse STEM workforce through training and involvement in design and implementation. Proposals can be for 'Implementation' projects with total costs between $4 million and $20 million, or for 'Design' activities requesting between $400,000 and $20 million to prepare for future implementation projects. The NSF encourages proposals from a wide range of institutions, including those in EPSCoR jurisdictions, and participation from diverse individuals such as women, early-career researchers, and persons with disabilities.
