This funding opportunity from the Department of Health and Human Services aims to support innovative research focused on precision probiotic therapies. The goal is to identify person-specific biological patterns that influence probiotic responses and to develop strategies for enhancing probiotic clinical outcomes. The initiative utilizes a milestone-driven, biphasic R61/R33 Phased Innovation Award mechanism. The R61 phase, lasting up to two years, will focus on identifying unique host biological patterns, such as microbiome composition, immune system status, gender, age, genetic background, and health history, that correlate with varying probiotic clinical effects. This phase may involve observational or secondary data analysis studies. The subsequent R33 phase will support studies to validate the identified patterns and assess their ability to improve probiotic responsiveness through rigorously designed mechanistic studies in animal models or human subjects. The total duration for the combined R61/R33 award should not exceed five years. Transition from the R61 to the R33 phase is subject to administrative review and successful completion of clearly defined transition milestones outlined in the R61 application. Eligibility is open to various institutions, including Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, eligible Federal Government agencies, faith-based or community-based organizations, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Indian/Native American Tribal Governments, and U.S. territory governments. Non-U.S. entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.
