Description
The U.S. Air Force is seeking the design, development, and testing of an advanced reserve power source for weapon systems. The technology must support avionics, guidance, and ordnance initiation throughout the flight profile, remain reliable after more than 20 years of storage without maintenance or significant energy loss, and be inherently safe without inadvertent activation or thermal runaway. When activated, the power source must reach full voltage within 600 milliseconds and operate for at least five minutes. It must withstand shock, vibration, worldwide hot- and cold-day conditions, carriage, high-speed free flight, and storage environments. Required performance includes a minimum specific energy of 40 Wh/kg, an average pulse-power load of at least 2.5 kW/kg, and a goal exceeding 100 Wh/kg specific energy and 5 kW/kg over 60 seconds. Lithium-based technologies must demonstrate no venting under NAVSEA S9310-AQ-SAF-010 test conditions for ordnance-system certification.
