The National Science Foundation (NSF) is soliciting proposals through its Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program. This program aims to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation for research and research training within institutions of higher education and not-for-profit scientific/engineering research organizations. Awards support the acquisition of commercially available instruments or the development of instruments with new capabilities, thereby advancing instrumentation and enhancing expertise in instrument design and fabrication. The MRI Program provides funding for critical research instrumentation that may not be supported by other NSF programs. It also supports the development of next-generation instruments to open new research opportunities. Awards are expected to enhance the research training of students who will become future instrument users, designers, and builders. Proposals can request up to $4 million from NSF. The program has different tracks based on funding requests: Track 1 (>$100,000 to $1.4 million), Track 2 (>$1.4 million to $4 million), and Track 3 (>$100,000 to $4 million, specifically for helium conservation equipment). Cost sharing requirements are waived for awards made from the FY 2023 competition onwards. The program encourages proposals from underrepresented groups in STEM, including women, minorities, persons with disabilities, and early-career PIs, as well as from under-resourced and emerging research institutions.
