Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is offering a licensing opportunity for its M-Resistor technology. This innovation provides pulsed power operators with enhanced protection and inspectability for high-voltage systems. Unlike previous designs that could fail internally without warning and potentially damage power supplies with reflected energy, the M-Resistor incorporates an adjustable spark-gap to an isolated ground. This feature diverts damaging reflected energy, improving protection across various voltage conditions. Additionally, the clear epoxy housing allows for visual inspection of the internal assembly and adjustment process, increasing operator confidence and supporting longer equipment life. The M-Resistor is designed for MARX-generated pulsed power systems. It functions as a charge resistor while providing a controlled path for unwanted reflected energy. The adjustable spark switch can be set to match the operating voltage, offering flexibility. Key advantages include protection of power supplies from damaging reflected energy, adjustable response for different voltages, improved worker visibility, easier detection of internal damage due to clear potting, and enhanced system safety through an isolated ground path. The technology is at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 and is patent pending. Market applications include Pulsed Power Systems (research platforms, test systems, laboratory pulse generation), Instrumentation (charging systems, protective interfaces, power conditioning assemblies), Defense (pulsed X-ray systems, evaluation platforms, hardened test assets), Industrial Electronics (specialty power equipment, high-voltage integration packages, reliability upgrades), and Scientific Research Infrastructure (physics laboratories, experimental facilities, university-scale pulsed power setups).
