This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) from the Department of Health and Human Services encourages investigators to pursue translational activities and clinical feasibility studies for the development of therapeutic and diagnostic devices targeting disorders of the nervous or neuromuscular systems. Supported activities include the implementation of clinical prototype devices, non-clinical safety and efficacy testing, design verification and validation, obtaining Investigational Device Exemptions (IDE) or Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, and subsequent clinical feasibility studies. This is a milestone-driven cooperative agreement program where NIH program staff will be involved in negotiating the final project plan and monitoring research progress. Participants will receive funding for their own laboratories and will collaborate with NIH-funded consultants for expertise in regulatory affairs, reimbursement, intellectual property, commercialization, and strategic partnerships. Additionally, participants can utilize NIH contract research organizations for services such as large animal testing, sterilization, biocompatibility assessment, manufacturing, and medical monitoring. Eligibility is broad, including various serving institutions, federal government agencies, faith-based or community-based organizations, and Native American tribal governments. Various types of organizations, including non-profits, for-profit entities (including small businesses), and state and local governments, are also eligible to apply.
