The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is soliciting proposals for its International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program. This program aims to foster international research and research-related activities for U.S. science and engineering students, contributing to the development of a diverse, globally engaged workforce with world-class skills. The IRES program focuses on active research participation by undergraduate and/or graduate students in high-quality international research, education, and professional development experiences within NSF-funded research areas. The ultimate goals are to enhance U.S. leadership in science and engineering research and education and to strengthen economic competitiveness by training the next generation of science research leaders. Student participants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents. Proposals are not submitted directly to NSF by students; rather, students apply to NSF-funded investigators who have received IRES awards. Principal Investigators (PIs), co-PIs, and Senior Personnel on IRES proposals must be from U.S.-based organizations, with personnel from international partners listed as "non-NSF funded collaborators." IRES projects are expected to engage cohorts of students in active, high-quality collaborative research, ideally at an international site with mentorship from international researchers. Projects should be organized around a coherent intellectual theme, which may span single or multiple NSF-funded disciplines. PIs are strongly encouraged to outline a variety of virtual, hybrid, or alternative approaches to strengthen and maintain international collaboration beyond travel, thereby enhancing the overall strength of IRES proposals.
