The Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E), part of the Department of Energy, is offering the Seeding Critical Advances for Leading Energy technologies with Untapped Potential (SCALEUP) Ready program. This initiative aims to support the scaling of innovative energy R&D projects that have already received ARPA-E funding. The program focuses on technologies that, despite technical advancements, face challenges in commercialization and risk being stranded after initial funding ends. SCALEUP Ready seeks to translate bench-scale performance to commercially scalable versions, integrate technologies into broader systems, provide extended performance data, and validate manufacturability and reliability. The goal is to enable industry stakeholders to commit the necessary resources for commercial deployment and to prevent valuable intellectual property from being adopted by foreign competitors. Projects selected for SCALEUP Ready must be based on subject inventions or software developed under a prior ARPA-E award, for which a patent has been obtained or a domestic patent application has been filed. While original awardees can apply, entities that have licensed or purchased rights to these inventions are also eligible. Applicants must demonstrate a clear path to market and commercialization, highlighting how the proposed scaling project will unlock further investment and adoption. The program encourages projects with significant technical and financial uncertainty that industry alone may not undertake, aligning with ARPA-E's mission to accelerate transformational technological advances and ensure U.S. competitiveness in advanced energy technologies.
