The National Park Service (NPS) is offering grants through the Readiness and Recreation Initiative (RARI), a program within the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). This initiative aims to provide outdoor recreation opportunities and promote compatible land uses to avoid incompatible development near military installations, while also enhancing disaster resilience. RARI operates in partnership with the Department of War (DOW) and can fund up to 100% of project costs when combined with DOW's Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) funds. Eligible projects must include a land acquisition component, be located within a REPI Partnership Opportunity Area or Sentinel Landscape, and have a letter of support from a military installation or range commander. Projects must also align with LWCF requirements, including perpetual maintenance for public outdoor recreation use, and adhere to statewide comprehensive outdoor recreation plans and national priorities. Eligible applicants include State and Territorial Lead Agencies, who can apply on behalf of other eligible sub-recipients such as other state agencies, federally recognized Indian tribes, and local governments or special purpose districts. Private landowners, for-profit organizations, non-profits, and businesses are not eligible to apply directly. Awards range from $250,000 to $3,000,000, with applications being evaluated on a rolling basis until November 1, 2030.
