The National Science Foundation's Science and Technology Centers: Integrative Partnerships program supports exceptionally innovative, complex research and education projects requiring large-scale, long-term awards. Proposed centers may address any area of science and engineering supported by the NSF and should pursue new scientific paradigms, new disciplines, or transformative technologies with broad scientific or societal impact. Centers are expected to establish partnerships among higher-education institutions, national laboratories, industrial organizations, public or private entities, and international organizations as appropriate. They must integrate research and education, broaden participation in STEM—including participation by groups traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering—and conduct knowledge-transfer activities that disseminate scientific and technical information across multiple sectors. Eligible lead applicants are domestic doctoral degree-granting institutions of higher education, and the principal investigator must be a full-time faculty member with an established record of leading research teams. The program lists estimated total funding of $30,000,000, with individual awards ranging from $1,500,000 to $6,000,000, and uses cooperative agreements.
