Description
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking to license its Bacterial Lipid Nanodiscs Platform technology. This platform allows researchers to study entire bacterial membranes in a controlled, nanoscale format using native lipid extracts. It provides a safer alternative to handling live pathogens while preserving biological context, making it valuable for vaccine design, antimicrobial discovery, and the identification of therapeutic antibodies. The technology involves creating uniform nanoscale discs (approximately 10 nanometers wide) by encasing total lipid extracts from bacterial membranes with a membrane scaffold protein, MSP1D1. This process yields stable nanoparticles that mimic the native membrane environment, supporting realistic biological interactions without the need for synthetic lipids or live cells. The platform has been demonstrated using Yersinia pestis, enabling the characterization of membrane components like lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and immunogenic lipids without the safety concerns associated with live high-risk pathogens. This technology is particularly useful for assessing binding interactions, immune responses, and potential antigenic targets. Key advantages include the use of native bacterial lipids, avoidance of pathogen handling risks, a broader lipid environment compared to synthetic nanodiscs, and a unified workflow for diverse bacterial species. Market applications span life sciences research, vaccine and drug discovery, diagnostics, and biodefense research. The technology is at Technology Readiness Level 3 and has a U.S. patent pending.
