This opportunity from the Department of Health and Human Services invites applications for the Independent Scientist Award (K02). This award aims to support outstanding scientists in developing their potential to make significant contributions to their research fields. It provides salary support and protected time for newly independent scientists to focus on intensive research for career enhancement. The focus is on basic science experimental studies involving human participants, which are defined as prospective studies that assign participants to conditions, experimentally manipulate independent variables, and assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes to understand fundamental phenomena without specific application towards processes or products. This funding opportunity is specifically for studies that meet the NIH definition of a clinical trial and also qualify as basic research. Applicants not planning an independent clinical trial or basic experimental study with humans, or those seeking research experience under another investigator, should refer to the companion FOA. The proposed research must align with the programmatic interests of participating NIH Institutes and Centers. Eligibility is broad, including various serving institutions, federal government agencies, faith-based or community-based organizations, and tribal governments. However, non-U.S. entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible to apply. Foreign components are permitted.
