This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) from the Department of Health and Human Services aims to support translational research to deepen the understanding of mood and psychosis disorders, such as perimenopausal depression, generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, during the menopause transition. The goal is to identify targets for novel treatment interventions by investigating the underlying neurobiological and behavioral mechanisms. This opportunity encourages interdisciplinary collaboration on studies examining mood and psychosis symptoms in conjunction with menopause symptoms like hot flashes and sleep disturbances, the influence of reproductive steroids on mood and behavior, diagnosis of symptoms at different menopausal stages, and the interplay of psychosocial factors. Review criteria will emphasize the comprehensiveness of the research on neurobiology, mechanisms of action, and hypothesis-driven work. Various entities are eligible to apply, including Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs), eligible agencies of the Federal Government, faith-based or community-based organizations, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized), non-U.S. entities, regional organizations, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs), and U.S. territories or possessions. Eligible applicant types include independent school districts, for-profit organizations other than small businesses, state governments, nonprofits (with or without 501c3 status), special district governments, private and public/state institutions of higher education, small businesses, public and Indian housing authorities, other Native American tribal organizations, county governments, and city or township governments.
