Description
The FY 2027 Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative supports high-risk, multidisciplinary basic research by U.S. institutions of higher education with degree-granting science or engineering programs. The announcement covers 16 topics spanning areas such as advanced materials, quantum science, artificial intelligence, atmospheric communications, biological systems, electrochemistry, and self-healing structures. Industry, foreign entities, Department of War laboratories, and federally funded research and development centers may collaborate but may not receive MURI funds directly or through subawards. Awards are expected to be grants, with cooperative agreements also available for Army Research Office topics. Total program funding is estimated at $170 million, with typical annual funding of up to $1.5 million per grant and a maximum award ceiling of $15 million. White papers are optional but strongly recommended; full proposals must be submitted through Grants.gov. Applications require the applicable Research and Related forms, a project abstract, technical proposal, budget and budget justification, senior/key-person materials, current and pending support disclosures, and required certifications and privacy-consent documentation. Proposal attachments must be PDF files, and the technical proposal is limited to 25 pages. The anticipated period is a three-year base with two one-year option periods.
