Paul Calabresi Career Development Award in Clinical Oncology (K12)
Description
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the Paul Calabresi Career Development Award for Clinical Oncology (K12). This award aims to support institutional research career development programs designed to train clinical scientists in cancer research, foster their career progression, and prepare them to collaborate effectively with basic research scientists. NCI Calabresi K12 programs are required to feature at least two oncology specialties among their faculty and Scholars. The programs should leverage the institution's strengths in these specialties, integrate the latest research and technology advancements into their curricula, and establish individualized career development plans for Scholars. Each Scholar will be assigned two mentors: one clinician engaged in patient-oriented research and one basic science cancer researcher. Award budgets may cover salaries for the Principal Investigator(s) and Scholars, research and development support, and administrative costs. The application must specify the number of Scholar appointments proposed annually. Scholars receive a minimum of two and a maximum of three years of consecutive funding, with 12-month appointments, contingent upon satisfactory progress towards an independent academic career. The program accommodates Scholars who plan to lead an independent clinical trial, conduct a separate ancillary study to an existing trial, or gain research experience within a clinical trial led by another investigator.
